Propellant 23
October 6, 1962

Written by Jon Manchip White
Designed by Paul Bernard
Directed by Jonathan Alwyn

Plot Summary

Steed and Cathy are scheduled to meet a courier, in Marseilles, who is carrying a sample of a new rocket fuel, Propellant 23. But as soon as the man arrives at the airport, he collapses and dies. However the fuel sample is not among the man's belongings, so Steed and Cathy begin chasing tales of various containers that were known to be in the man's possession. Unfortunately, they're not the only ones looking.

My Thoughts

A compelling beginning, set on board the plane before it lands, leads to a decent story. Minus points for the lack of French accents... Bonus points for the appearance of Catherine Woodville, Patrick Macnee's wife at the time.

Continuity & Production Problems

When Meyer bursts into the plane's flight deck, we see a brief flash of the boom mike and its shadow.

The clock in the airport lounge appears several times, but only ever denotes the times 3:55 and 4:10. In fact, it is still ten-past four when Steed finally leaves the airport the next day.

After being pronounced dead, the actor playing Meyer gasps one final breath.

The picture briefly freezes and jumps in two instances... Once when Laura is behind the airport counter, and again when Steed and his companion are sitting in Cathy's car.

An intruder breaks into an office by sliding a knife between the window frames... Once again the frames contain no glass.

The actor playing the bald Curly LeClerc is clearly wearing a (badly fitting) skull cap.

Fluffed Dialogue

Customs Officer: (Says with great difficulty) "And this will be of interest to the police, all this talk of a bottle."
